When I first started thinking of a game to run at PaizoCon II, I asked myself what setting had appealed to me the most during my formative early years of gaming. All of them had its appeal, certainly, but what one really called a challenge to my desire to take something completely away from its rules origins and place it in Paizo’s Pathfinder RPG Beta ruleset?
Dark Sun. Yes. The Burnt World of Athas. Magic has corrupted the land into a wasteland worthy of Mad Max, creatures are predatory, savage and psionic, and the people that dwell there only less so.
Most of my references are from the Third Edition updates contained within the Dragon and Dungeon magazines in 2004, but some of the things that really made it Dark Sun, well, Dark Sun, were not originally included, such as wild talents. I did not like how wild talents were handled in the XPH, and being a fan of the random nature of wild talents in the original setting, I reintroduced the concept.
Contained in this PDF is a rough guide, along with the six characters I used in the “Under a Red Sky” four hour game I ran at PaizoCon II. All of the characters are gladiators in the arenas of Nibenay, and while the original plot line centered on the PCS protecting a princess of Nibenay who took the Oath of the Preserver, they can be used for pretty much anything. Including a beatdown. Oh yes, they’re quite good at that.
Hope you enjoy the foray back into the Tablelands as much as I did. Log in to download a PDF compilation of my game notes and some sample characters.
